Renu Raman  |  Executive-in-Residence

Renu Raman has two decades of experience in semiconductors, computer systems architecture, CAD and networking architecture. His focus has been delivering innovation through early adoption of disruptive trends in existing markets both consumer and infrastructure.

During his tenure at Sun Microsystems spanning more than a decade, Renu was responsible for delivery of multiple generations of SPARC microprocessors starting with ECL based SPARC in the early years of RISC evolution to advanced multi-core SPARC. Starting with Industry's first highly integrated CMOS microprocessor (microSPARC) in the 1991, he led the transition to CMOS and developed CAD methodologies that was the basis for Sun's microprocessor development throughout the 1990s. In the late 1990s recognizing the diminishing return from Clock rate growth in microprocessor performance, he led the initial development of multicore and multithreaded processor architectures within Sun that evolved into the industry leading Niagara family of designs. As Senior Director at Sun, Renu led multiple design teams across multiple sites (Santa Clara and Austin) that delivered more than 8 microprocessors. In his long history at Sun (16 years), Renu has accumulated broad background in computer and systems architecture, CAD and design methodology and silicon implementation. Renu has several Patents in computer architecture and power optimized circuit designs.

At InSilica Renu was VP/GM of Imaging and Multimedia Product development. Renu was recruited to build a standard product family within an ASIC business model that InSilica was founded upon. Leveraging the disruptive trends in cell phones, he led the development of industry's lowest cost, lowest power cameras for cellular applications. He successfully built a $10m business and a portfolio of imaging and video centric products for cellular and portable applications.
